Chapter Fifteen

Whatever else Fer could say about his hand’s eating habits, it was certainly efficient. Considering the size of the Beast they’d felled, the body was gone in a ludicrously short amount of time, even with Saer’s assistance. Mostly, Fer was just happy to have a comfortably full stomach again. He’d almost forgotten a time when he wasn’t hungry.

Saer sat back on his haunches, his long violet tongue snaking out to lick the last traces of blood from his pale muzzle. “Better. Now what?”

With his left hand resting over his stomach, Fer felt rather lazy and replete. Still, he gave Saer’s question some thought. He still wasn’t sure where they were, though with any luck they wouldn’t be too far from the caravan’s original path. Trying to limp heavily laden wagons through the wilds was begging to get stuck or eaten.

“Now,” he started slowly, thinking as he spoke. “I’ll need to help the others to find their way back to Dunwatch Keep. They’re already days overdue. I also need to find out what happened to the rest of my party.”

A twinge of worry snaked through him like a blast of chilly air. The others had all made it to the high ground before the floods had swept Fer away. With any luck, they were safe and had already made their way back.

Fer’s arm twinged, the scales itching. He rubbed at it absently as he turned to Saer.

“I don’t suppose you’d like to tag along? I wouldn’t recommend actually coming into the keep, no one is likely to take that well, but we do make an awfully good team.”

The Wolf Beast considered, his nose dipping down to the ground as if to make sure they hadn’t overlooked a single morsel. “Until we reach the human den,” he agreed. “The hunting is good in these parts.”

In spite of the ache building in his bones, Fer couldn’t hold back his grin. There was something comforting about Saer at his side, and while he wasn’t going to think about it too much, he was glad to have him there.

He opened his mouth to say something, most likely something maudlin that he’d never admit to later, but the ache and itch in his arm suddenly surged into a fierce burn, and Ferren’s breath left him in a pained hiss.

Saer’s ears flattened and Fer grabbed for his right arm. “What—”

Bone stretched unnaturally, forming a wide plate where Ferren’s forearm should have been. He staggered, off balance. It wasn’t particularly heavy, not much more so than his normal arm would be, but the shape was odd and a bit unwieldy, forming something close to a rectangle a bit bigger than his torso. Fer held it stiffly to one side, staring in confusion.

“Huh.” He gave his arm a couple practice swings. The odd bone plate wasn’t hard to manipulate. And if he held it in front of him, it might actually give him some protection from some attacks.

Fer crouched, bringing the shield form in front of his body to peer over the top edge at Saer.
